Cleft lip and palate are openings or tears in the upper lip, the roof of the mouth, or both. Cleft lip and palate develop when developing facial structures do not close completely in a fetus. Cleft lip and palate are among the most common birth defects. They usually present as isolated birth defects but are also associated with many inherited genetic conditions or syndromes.
