Splinting therapy is the foundation and an integral part of a comprehensive TMJ treatment plan. It is the main and most important therapeutic device for many TMJ disorders. Splints can be used to stabilize the bite, treat temporomandibular disorders, or prevent tooth wear.
A common goal of occlusal splint treatment is to protect the intervertebral discs of the temporomandibular joint from dysfunctional forces that can lead to perforation or permanent displacement. Other goals of treatment include improving jaw muscle function and relieving associated pain by creating a stable, balanced bite.
